So many great quotes come out of my conversations with my guests! This is a weekly piece with some words that might just get you thinking about your own life.
This week the power of music is on my mind. Here are three amazing people using sound to make the world a better place.
“Everything is energy.”-Douglas Cardwell
Douglas Cardwell is a master of sound. He’s played with the Detroit and Houston symphonies and at the time of our conversation, was the Master Percussionist and Principal Timpanist for the New Mexico Philharmonic. Music, combined with a passion for healing, have combined to form Lotus Sound Bath .Using quartz crystal singing bowls, gongs and cymbals, Douglas creates an individualized sound experience that is part meditation, part sound healing.
Vibrational medicine and sound healing have been with us for hundreds of years. Nicola Tesla once said that “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.”
What is the secret of sound? What is the magic of music?
Tina is an accomplished composer. Over her forty-five-year career, Tina has been commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra, OperaDelaware, Roanoke Symphony, VocalEssence, Kronos Quartet, Cassatt Quartet, and more.
My conversation with Tina is almost lyrical. Contemplating her decades of achievement, Tina notes:
I am struck by music’s linear process, where duration is the great ingredient.
Unlike visual art, music cannot be experienced all at once. Instead, it moves through time.
As we listen, we construct the hole in our mind through memory, like a transparent ghost. Music moves our hearts with its lack of tangible substance.
How is it that music’s ‘lack of tangible substance’ can move us in the present, pull us into our past and still lay a path for our future?
“Music is this magical time machine.”-Vincent James
Vincent James is an engineer turned music education advocate. In our conversation he shares his journey from the structured world of technology to his heart felt journey into the world of music.
Vincent’s path is a brave one. He left behind the security of his job to create a new, passion filled path forward. And the lives he’s touched! His book The 88 Ways Music Can Change Your Life is full of musical anecdotes that will touch your soul.
What is it about the soul in music? What is it in your soul that merges with sound’s energy? And where might that take you?
