So many great quotes come out of my conversations with my guests! This is a weekly piece with some words that might just get you thinking about your own life.
Thanksgiving is this week and it makes me reflect on what I’m grateful for. And there is so much.
My recent move from Arizona to Idaho which was partly (largely) an intuitive decision has turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made in a long time. (Hint: Cultivate and trust your intuition. Check out Nancy Orlen Weber’s recent podcast).
In short order, I’ve met great people; am making friends; and most of all pursuing some of my favorite interests outside of writing: pickleball, locally sourced food and even wine, photography, aviation, hiking, and soon, skiing. Maybe a bit of snowshoeing too!
I never expected to move from one coast to another without a spouse or friend (for that matter, I never expected to be without a spouse!); to own and fly a stunning sailplane based out of Minden, NV (one of the world’s best soaring locations); to have Tahoe as my backyard; to experience total, devastating personal and business betrayal on numerous fronts that totally changed my life trajectory more than once; to deal with “incurable” cancer and all the life disruption that goes with it; to sell everything and travel the world; and more. So I suppose it’s natural that I gravitate to some of my guests that have also embraced life as an adventure, intentionally or not! I am grateful for their stories, as I am for my own.
Here are three stories that I hope will encourage you to see life as the amazing adventure it is and to pursue whatever it is that captures your imagination, with gratitude for it all.
“Persistence is sort of my middle name.” – Anne Lorimor
Anne Lorimor has climbed Kilimanjaro not once, but twice. The first time earned her the title of the oldest person to summit this African peak. But then a man bested her record, claiming the “oldest” title for himself.
Anne’s response: Climb it again and regain her title! So she did.
I think of Nick often when I take on a new adventure. Nick went from a three piece suit health care executive to a kilt wearing, ground breaking leader in human connectivity. He’s the co-founder of PinkSocks. Why PinkSocks? Because you’re very likely to have someone ask you about them, forging a new connection in a world needing more human care and connection.
Here’s his TED talk. It’s heartfelt, hilarious and deeply thoughtful. Enjoy!
And Rick is grateful for them all. He left a secure and well paying software job to live in a converted school bus and travel. His tales are legendary. And his smile says it all. The unconventional life suits him and this Thanksgiving, I suspect he’s very grateful for taking the risk to follow his heart and intuition.
