So many great quotes come out of my conversations with my guests! This is a weekly piece with some words that might just get you thinking about your own life.
Veteran’s Day was this past week, so this post is an homage to some of the remarkable vets that have been on Bump In The Road. I posted Caroline Jensen’s story (Combat Vet and Thunderbird pilot) earlier this week. Here are three more remarkable stories from our vets.
Arnold is a highly decorated Army Huey helicopter pilot. His book, “Dustoff: More Than Met The Eye” is a story of how Vietnam has impacted his life. His mission as an Operation Dustoff pilot was to fly, unarmed, into the Vietnam War to save wounded warriors.
Combat is terrifying for everyone. Can you think of a time in your life where you were terrified, but managed to function? When you look back on that, do you feel pride? Can you relate to the pride of our vets?
One of Martha’s favorite sayings is “do things afraid”. And her book, “Dare To Fly: Simple Lessons In Never Giving Up”, opens up with the perfect example as she climbs into the seat of an A-10 attack plane. It is a single seat plane and it was her first flight. There were no simulators and no one could teach her how to fly it. She simply had to do it.
Martha’s amazing career includes combat time, suing the Department of Defense (McSally v. Rumsfeld), and serving in both the U.S. House and Senate.
“Courage,” she says” is a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it gets.”
How do you plan to exercise your “courage muscle” this week?
“Lean into service, what is helpful.” -Kamin Samuel
Kamin’s life is defined by service, first in the Navy and now as a spiritual coach and counselor.
Kamin Samuel was the first African American woman to fly helicopters in the Navy. She flew a CH-46 Sea Knight Helicopter, went on numerous deployments and worked as a flight instructor at NAS North Island (of Top Gun fame).
Kamin also describes herself as a life long learner whose curiosity turned to spiritual psychology .
If you could choose one topic to study and participate in for the rest of your life, what would it be? Could you see it in your future?
