While Memorial Day is a day of remembrance, it’s also a day to say thanks. This week, for Memorial Day, some thoughts from who served in the Armed Forces.
“Lean into service, what is helpful.” -Kamin Samuel
Kamin Samuel was the first African American woman to fly helicopters in the Navy. She flew a CH-46 Sea Knight Helicopter, went on numerous deployments and worked as a flight instructor at NAS North Island.
But since the service, her life has hit a few bumps, leading her in a spiritual direction. As she says: “I got a PhD to justify all the woo stuff I’d learned. So now I had the science to back up the spiritual things I’d learned as well.”
Do you approach life from the perspective of science or spirituality? Is there a difference in your mind?
“When you choose to do things afraid, you build your courage.” -Martha McSally
Many things stand out about Martha McSally. She rose to rise to the rank of Colonel in the US Air Force and become the first woman to fly in combat.
But for me, the thing I remember most, is the opening of her book “Dare To Fly: Simple Lessons in Never Giving Up” where she talks about the guts it takes to get into a single seat aircraft for the first time and fly it.
Martha is a walking testament to firsts, to courage and to doing things afraid.
What have you done that made you feel most afraid? What did you learn from going through the process?
Arnold is a highly decorated Army Huey pilot. During the Vietnam war, Bell UH-1 Iroquois or “Hueys” were used for three purposes: As transports or “slicks”, for medical evacuation, or as gunships. The medical mission was named “Dustoff”.
Dustoff pilots like Arnold faced many hurdles in rescuing their fellow soldiers. Facing incoming fire while the Huey hovered over the dense jungle was a common one.
Arnold reflects on how the war has impacted him. “I’ve tried to do what I can to help others because I want to give back and justify the life God gave me.”
Has a bump in the road ever motivated you to give back? How?
