This week, on Father’s Day, some thoughts on the journeys and the wisdom that results from some of the men who have been on this podcast.
“Emotion, not fact, is the driver of all action.” -Terry Fossum
We tend to regret the things we didn’t do, rather than the things we did. Do you have to live with regret?
This episode is about getting out of your comfort zone to realize your dreams.
Terry saw that people are more motivated to avoid pain than to seek pleasure. He created a motivational construct he calls the Oxcart Method. It involves creating a failure scenario alongside a success scenario, thereby leveraging both positive and negative emotions to drive action. This dual approach ensures that individuals remain motivated even when the allure of positive outcomes is not enough.
Are you more driven by fear or the promise of success? Could both serve to motivate you?
“Observation is the first step to self-development.” -Doug Stoddard
Doug Stoddard employs the science of neuroscience to help business leaders understand their innermost motivations.
He notes that 90% of what we experience in our professional lives is rooted in our emotional responses and habitual thought patterns. The better we observe and know ourselves and our patterns, the more consciously we can react.
“First, know thyself,” is the quote that comes to mind. How well do any of us know ourselves? How might we change that for our benefit and for the well being of those around us? And how might neuroscience help us do that?
“It’s all about tapping in that light that exists within us.” -Erik Weihenmayer
Erik Weihenmayer climbed Everest on his first attempt, and reached the top of all Seven Summits, the highest mountain on each continent. He’s climbed the nearly vertical El Capitan in Yosemite and rafted the raging rapids along 277 miles of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. He’s an author, adventurer, speaker and founder of NoBarriersUSA.org.
Did I mention he is blind?
Erik offers inspiration Father’s Day and every day. Coping with what many would consider a disability that would sideline one’s life, Erik has created a life of adventure and giving. His organization NoBarriersUSA offers Outward Bound types of experiences for the disability and veterans communities. Check them out. They’re truly amazing.
What would you do if you lost your sight? Would you continue to find adventure and meaning in life? What would it take to do that?
