This week, some thoughts on shifting priorities away from materialism towards a more minimalistic life and the rewards that follow.
Laura Lynch ditched the big house for a tiny one. Portia Louder’s wardrobe is simplicity itself. And Jill Bolte Taylor (of My Stroke of Insight fame) lives simply on a houseboat.
What directed each of these people towards a simpler lifestyle? And what are the benefits?
Like many of us, Laura followed the prescribed path: education, a steady job, and homeownership. But during the pandemic, she had a moment of realization that this path wasn’t a good fit for her. This led her to explore tiny living, a lifestyle that has brought her much closer to her true self and values.
Through exercises and deep reflection, she discovered that independence and exploration were essential to her happiness. This revelation set her on a path to downsize her life significantly. She moved from a 2300 square foot house to a tiny home, embracing a minimalist lifestyle that allowed her to focus on what truly mattered. She now lives in a tiny house in Abiquiu, New Mexico.
“It took away all the worldly things that I had been caught up in and made it more made me more open to things that really matter.” -Portia Louder
Portia, a successful realtor and devoted mother living in Utah, went to federal prison for mis-stating property values during the 2008 crisis. The time away from the outside world gave Portia time to reflect. How would she choose to respond to this experience? Stripped of her societal identities and roles, who was she? What did she truly value?
Today her wardrobe is simple and her life reflective and rich. This is a story about our values, judgements, acceptance, and personal evolution. And so much more.
A stroke changed Jill’s life trajectory. She went from a Harvard brain researcher to totally disabled, as a clot in the left side of her brain took away all executive functioning. Nearly a decade later, she’s written a life changing book “Whole Brain Living” that draws on her personal experiences and her professional background.
The stroke changed Dr. Taylor’s life in many ways.
Today Dr. Taylor lives simply on a houseboat. She relishes the peace and the outdoors. It’s a far cry from the frantic pace of prestigious Cambridge. But it’s from here she shares her incredible passion and insight for what makes for “Whole Brain Living.”
