This week, some thoughts on passion, curiosity, and the places we might go!
“When I look back at my young self, how did I know to follow my love, this marathon?
I followed this love even though it was way outside the social norm.” -Bobbi Gibb
Bobbi Gibb clearly saw the flaws in the social paradigm that limited both men and women in living fully developed lives. But how could she change it?
The answer came in a rejection letter. Bobbi had applied to run in the Boston Marathon, but was rejected on the basis of her sex. Women, she was told, were biologically incapable of running such a distance. But the apparent setback was really an opportunity in disguise.
She dressed in her brother’s shorts and hoodie, finished the marathon and changed running history.
Passion has been a cornerstone of Bobbi’s life. Passion and curiosity. Where might your passion take you? What are you curious about?
“I always knew that I had to keep feeding the goal.” -Joe Hippensteel
From a young age, Joe was passionate about sports. His goal: the Olympics. Years of intense training, often spanning six to ten hours a day, led to over 100 injuries. The Olympics were no longer a possibility.
The ancient adage of “heal thyself” led Joe to develop a healing system that has garnered attention and respect from various communities, including Navy SEALs and professional athletes. Joe’s insights offer a new paradigm for healing, outside of traditional sports and allopathic medicine.
Joe’s passion to compete had evolved into a passion to heal. Like Bobbi, he is changing his part of the world.
What part of your world would you like to change? Can you be the change you want to see?
“Our fulfillment and happiness zone is just outside our comfort zone.” -Jocelyn King
Sometimes our passion comes from discomfort. Jocelyn King and her family were targeted by cybercriminals in a persistent and invasive attack that compromised their security, both online and offline.
Even though Jocelyn was a Silicon Valley tech exec, solving the situation was not simple. But it spurred a passion in Jocelyn to help others avoid a similar experience. Now she teaches people what she wishes she had known! And along the way, she developed a sense of personal awareness and empowerment that transformed her life.
Have you ever had a passion that came from a bump in the road? How has that passion enriched your life?
