This saying-”if you change nothing, nothing will change”- is a visual I keep on my annual vision board. It reminds me that my future is up to me and chances are that it’s outside my comfort zone.
Each year I do a virtual vision board representing the changes I want to see in my life for the next twelve months. I use Powerpoint for Mac. It offers a clean board for your virtual images. And it’s easy to tweak, making images instantly larger or smaller or with a flick of the delete button, just disappear. And you can do more than one board if you’d like.
This is a great tool to revisit as the year goes on. Where are you succeeding? What needs more attention? What have you achieved? Has something dropped off your board? Maybe you need to add a few new things!
Starting, your board is absolutely blank. Think of this as a representation of the present moment. A vision board is an expression of possibility, in the here and now. You get to add anything you want.
The most important part is to really think about what touches your soul. Going ahead, what is the story you want to create? Grab as many photos as you’d like. Make them bigger or smaller as you wish. Add them, take them away or create multiple boards.
As you go through this exercise, observe what touches you. It’s a fascinating, intuitive process that reflects your conscious and not so conscious choices. Do you choose mountain or beach scenes; photos with many people or just one; what colors appeal to your eye and what is their energy? Is there a theme(s) emerging from your board? What type of images take up the majority of space?
This year my vision board roughly breaks down into (1) Continued growth of Bump, the podcast and book series; (2) More public speaking engagements; (3) The outdoors and fitness; (4) Photography; and (5) “Just say yes” to social opportunities as I expand my network in a new town.
Sometimes you can combine themes. For me, speaking supports the podcast and books. Fitness and photography can reinforce each other. And together, all support my social needs for expanding my networks in a new town.
Science has proven that matter responds to our attention. Our attention influences our reality. (Quantum physics anyone?) At this moment, the present moment, we are free to create whatever we wish. Our vision can be free of past encumberments. We can take a totally new direction, explore previously unknown worlds and go on an adventure of our choosing. We just have to “make it so’ (Jean-Luc Picard).
It’s an amazing universe. What will you choose to create?
